RCMP charge London, Ont. 19-year-old in Heartbleed theft of 900 SINs from CRA website

Less than a week after the RCMP was notified of a malicious cyber attack that resulted in the theft of 900 social insurance numbers from the Canada Revenue Agency’s Website, a 19-year-old London, Ont. man has become the first person to be arrested in connection with the Heartbleed security bug.
RCMP officers say they arrested Stephen Arthuro Solis-Reyes at his Ontario home on Tuesday, seizing computer equipment and charging him with one count of unauthorized use of a computer and one count of mischief in relation to data, the RCMP said in a statement.

The RCMP allege Mr. Solis-Reyes exploited the Heartbleed bug — a vulnerability in the commonly used OpenSSL Internet security technology — to hack into the CRA’s Website and extract private taxpayer information.

Mr. Solis-Reyes is scheduled to appear in court in Ottawa on July 17.
