Virginia governor Bob McDonnell gets 2 years

Former Virginia governor Bob McDonnell, who asked a judge Tuesday for mercy for his wife and himself, was sentenced to two years in federal prison for public corruption.
McDonnell was convicted Sept. 4 of trading access to the power of the governor’s office for more than $165,000 in loans and high-end gifts. Prosecutors had wanted him to spend more than 10 years in prison, but early in the four-hour hearing Judge James Spencer said federal officials misinterpreted the guidelines, contending the range was more like 78 to 97 months — 6½ to a little more than 8 years.
Then Spencer discarded the recommendations entirely but rejected the 6,000 hours of intensive community service that McDonnell’s lawyers had suggested.

Anti Gun Politicians

Alberta Tory backbencher Rob Anderson says Mounties have stepped up security and monitoring of his home and office following a phone threat to kill him.
He says he has received numerous “disturbing” emails and phone calls since he and eight other Wildrose MLAs crossed the floor.
Anderson announced this week he will not seek re-election, in part because of an angry reaction that followed his decision last month to join Premier Jim Prentice’s Progressive Conservatives.
The move dealt a grievous blow to Alberta’s Official Opposition, leaving it with five members versus 72 seats for the Tories.
RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Josee Valiquette declined to confirm if an investigation was underway.

Mulcair

NDP Leader Tom Mulcair said Wednesday he wants to give police the ability to track every firearm in Canada through some form of a gun registry – just not the one the country had under the Liberals.
Mulcair said he wouldn’t reconstitute the long-gun registry, which the Tories did away with in 2012. He said the registry, brought in by the previous Liberal government, had serious problems that needed to be addressed.
Mulcair didn’t say exactly what an NDP gun registry would look like, but said the party was working with “teams” and “people who are in the field” to design an effective tracking system.
