The United States Navy has decided to not change the rank of “midshipman” despite a call to push toward a more gender-neutral designation, The Daily Caller reported.
Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus began the push to review job titles to ensure that jobs were seen as open to both men and women early this year.
According to the Capital Gazette, Mabus asked for a review of “the position titles throughout the Navy and ensure that they are gender-integrated … removing ‘man’ from their titles.”
Although being inclusive is commendable, in this case, it was entirely unnecessary. Keep in mind — our tax dollars went toward service members reviewing job titles to ensure they’re not offensive.
However, the rank of midshipman has been preserved because it is a rank — not a job title.
Vice Admiral Ted Carter, superintendent of the United States Naval Academy, said that officials considered changing the rank of midshipman “very briefly,” according to The Daily Caller.
Even though the rank of midshipman remained unchanged, Carter was very optimistic about the future in regard to women and America’s Navy. As he wrote in a guest column for the Capital Gazette, “I’m extremely proud of what our graduates and our current midshipmen have accomplished on the field, in the classroom, in brigade leadership positions and beyond.
“I look forward to what they will achieve in the future as their opportunities to serve expand,” he continued. “For women in the Navy and Marine Corps, the future has never been brighter, and the Naval Academy will continue to develop women of character and consequence to lead our sailors and Marines.”
