Thousands March in Milwaukee to Protest Sheriff Clarke’s Crackdown

“Many peoples got to be afraid, you know.”

A crowd of as many as twenty thousand people in Milwaukee demonstrated against a possible immigration crackdown in a Day Without Latinos march Monday, according to the UK Daily Mail.

They were protesting Sheriff David Clarke’s plan to enroll his deputies in a federal program that allows them to perform immigration law enforcement functions. The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office said that it hasn’t officially sought that authority yet, but may do so.

Clarke, a man impossible to bully, released a statement on his Facebook page last week regarding the event: “Please accept my regrets. I will be working with agents from immigration and customs enforcement helping them identify criminal illegal aliens and therefore cannot attend your rally being held for me.”

Busloads of demonstrators from about a dozen communities around Wisconsin arrived to swell the numbers of local protesters in the mile-long march from Milwaukee’s predominantly Hispanic south side to the downtown courthouse. Organizers invited Latinos and others all over the state to close their businesses, take their children out of school, and march.

The Daily Mail reported that the crowd, estimated at 10-20,000 by police, consisted of parents with children in strollers, young men waving Mexican flags, and older protesters. They moved through the streets chanting “Si, podemos!” or “Yes we can!”

Milwaukee police officers blocked intersections to allow the massive crowd to move freely to the downtown courthouse. No arrests were made. What fascists the police are!

Jose Flores, board president at Voces de le Frontera, one of the groups organizing the march, said he is fearful of the thought that immigration law might be actually be enforced, and that criminals might actually be arrested and/or deported.

“Many peoples got to be afraid, you know. Like many families in this county, there’s a lot of hard workers. They are not criminals. We are not criminals,” Flores said.

Well, some are, and they should have to face the legal consequences. But hey, apparently enforcing the law is fascist and racist now.

Some of the activists reportedly were also marching against President Trump’s stand on immigration.

“There’s a lot of hate in the country now with the new president and we march for that too,” said Flores.

Very true — there is a lot of hate in the country now with the new president.
