My opinion is not the popular one but what I saw in Charlottesville Saturday is what President Trump saw — hate, violence and bigotry from “many sides.” And when you are the President of the United States attempting to do the most important thing, which is to restore law and order, what you cannot do is be seen as taking sides, even if doing so will appease the MSM and those in the GOP who foolishly seek to appease the MSM.

Trump singling out or in any way calling special attention to the white supremacists would only embolden the left-wing supremacists in the Antifa movement, the group that might have been responsible for the outbreak of violence Saturday.

No, what I saw Saturday was the equivalent of the Bolsheviks vs. the Mensheviks, the National Socialists (Nazis) vs. the Communists, naked evil vs. naked evil. A pox on both.

What a lot of other people also saw on Saturday, though, and this includes members of the national media, is police officers standing idly by as violence within their line of sight went unchallenged. From Pro Publica:

There was nothing haphazard about the violence that erupted today in this bucolic town in Virginia’s heartland. At about 10 a.m. today, at one of countless such confrontations, an angry mob of white supremacists formed a battle line across from a group of counter-protesters, many of them older and gray-haired, who had gathered near a church parking lot. On command from their leader, the young men charged and pummeled their ideological foes with abandon. One woman was hurled to the pavement, and the blood from her bruised head was instantly visible.

Standing nearby, an assortment of Virginia State Police troopers and Charlottesville police wearing protective gear watched silently from behind an array of metal barricades — and did nothing.

I’m not in the habit of second-guessing the police before all the facts are known, and we should also keep in mind that police officers follow orders from politicians and that some kind of “stand down” order might have been at work here. Nevertheless, there are a number of witnesses who claim to have seen this and this is not the first time Antifa has been able to start or at least provoke and/or participate in mob violence, this is not the first time Antifa has won what is called the “hecklers veto“:

In the free speech context, a heckler’s veto comprises either of two situations in which a person who disagrees with a speaker’s message is able to unilaterally trigger events that result in the speaker being silenced.

Actually, a better description of what Antifa keeps winning is a “rioters veto,” or physical access to free speech events that allows them to shut them down using riot tactics: personal violence, property damage, chaos and confusion.

Why is this allowed to continue to happen?

Even degenerate Nazis enjoy the right to free speech in America, the right to free assembly, and on Saturday these degenerates Nazis won a legal permit to stage a protest. Moreover, Charlottesville officials and law enforcement authorities not only had plenty of notice of the Nazi march, thanks to social media it was no secret that Antifa, a group made infamous for its riots (and attacks on police), was also on its way to Charlottesville.

Regardless of where the failure occurred, a massive failure did occur. Again. And this time people died, including a young woman at the hands of a neo-Nazi who is almost certainly guilty of weaponizing his vehicle to commit a domestic terror attack. This never should have been allowed to happen. The only horror we should have witnessed Saturday was bigots holding Tiki torches circling a statue.

There is no question that local and state authorities had plenty of time to create separate areas for the Bolsheviks and the Mensheviks, plenty of time to honor their primary responsibility, which is to maintain order as two separate groups peaceably assemble.

Instead what we saw was mayhem, which resulted in the Antifa rioters winning a moral victory after this legal protest was abruptly shut down by authorities (then all hell really broke loose).

Lost in this mess is the disturbing fact that Antifa successfully repeated this tactic less than 24 hours later in Seattle — but not against neo-Nazis, against everyday Americans expressing their support of Trump!

Why do authorities continue to provide inadequate protection for free speech events?

Why do the police continue to give Antifa physical access to their targets?

Why did police stand by Saturday as violence broke out?

Why is Antifa constantly allowed to enjoy a rioters veto, which of course only inspires more of the same behavior?

Why does this always happen in places run by Democrats?

I grew up in the age of Skokie, a time when liberals were still liberal, an era when the ACLU fought for the rights of neo-Nazis to hold a rally in the village of Skokie, Illinois, on the 4th of July, 1977. These Nazi pigs intentionally targeted Skokie, not only for its large Jewish population but its population of Holocaust survivors.

The national debate that followed the village’s attempt to stop the march was oftentimes bitter and angry. It was also illuminating and principled. Eventually the Supreme Court sided with free speech and by extension the neo-Nazis, and the good that resulted from the experience included a Holocaust museum, a better understanding of the First Amendment (a television movie dramatizing the legal battles was shown in my school), and a very funny sequence in The Blues Brothers (1980).

Better still, after winning the court battle, the neo-Nazis ended up voluntarily canceling their rally in Skokie.

This is how America is supposed to work.

Instead, though, in city after city and event after event, including against everyday Trump supporters in Seattle, an indifferent MSM, corrupted or incompetent Democrat politicians, and the police (for whatever reason) are handing Antifa, a mob every bit as evil as white supremacists, one moral victory after another in the form of a rioters veto. And not just against Nazis but against everyday Trump supporters.

Is this incompetence or intentional?

Either way, something is very, very wrong here and very, very unAmerican.
