On Monday, Stephen K. Bannon described Senate Majority Mitch McConnell (R-KY) as “corrupt,” “incompetent,” and a leading figure of the “permanent political class.”
Bannon framed the Republican primary between Roy Moore and Luther Strange — both vying for the GOP’s candidacy in Alabama’s special election for the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Jeff Sessions — as a referendum on McConnell, with Moore representing grassroots conservatives and Strange aligned with what Bannon described as a corrupt GOP leadership.
The Senate Majority Fund’s support for Strange’s candidacy with millions of dollars is proof of Strange’s alignment with a corrupt GOP leadership, said Bannon:
I think Roy Moore is the guy that’s gonna represent Donald Trump and fight the establishment. I mean, it’s very simple: this election has $30 million being spent by Mitch McConnell and that crew of corrupt and incompetent politicians and consultants. They’ve raised $30 million of outside money to destroy Judge Moore; Judge Moore has raised about $2 million. …
This is a referendum on the party at Davos and the elites in Davos and the United States in D.C., that Mitch McConnell’s the face of. Absolutely. It’s very simple. Tomorrow the good folks in Alabama are gonna decide if sovereignty rests with the people, or does it rest with the money? Is it gonna be the muscle of the grassroots versus the money of a corrupt and incompetent permanent political class that rules Washington, D.C. as a new aristocracy.
Hannity joined Bannon’s criticisms of McConnell: “He hasn’t gotten a thing done … in eight months. There’s no excuse for that in my opinion.”
President Donald Trump’s public support for Strange, said Bannon, was the result of some person or persons feeding the president misinformation.
