What happens when people with Christian worldviews and traditional family values are openly persecuted by the government?
That appears to be what is already happening in Canada, and a disturbing trend within our northern neighbor should serve as a warning of what may be coming to the United States soon.
In the province of Alberta, a couple hoping to adopt a child has had their application rejected by the government. The reason? They happen to personally believe that marriage is between a man and a woman.
“The Edmonton married couple say they submitted their application last year and passed a required course for potential adoptive parents,” reported CBC News. “But during a followup by officials this year, the couple say they ran into trouble when they answered questions about sexuality.”
Government workers forced the married couple to defend their views on gay marriage and homosexuality.
The couple, whose names have not been released for privacy reasons, explained that, as Christians, they do not personally believe that homosexuality is right. At the same time, they recognize that same-sex marriage is legal.
This answer is both honest and fairly straightforward. After all, there are many hot-button topics like gun rights and abortion that individuals can disagree on personally while still respecting the law.
Incredibly, the government told the prospective parents that their answer was unacceptable, and holding a traditional view of marriage disqualified them from ever adopting a child.
“The casework supervisor explained that our religious beliefs regarding sexuality were incompatible with the adoption process,” the couple explained in a court affidavit. “The casework supervisor said this stance was the ‘official position of the Alberta government.’”
Canadian officials also demanded answers to other personal questions, such as how the couple would deal with a child who was questioning his or her sexuality.
