OTTAWA, ON – Pierre Paul-Hus, Shadow Minister for Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, issued a statement following the final vote on the Liberals’ new firearms legislation, Bill C-71:
“Justin Trudeau’s Liberals have failed to address gun crime. Instead, their legislation senselessly targeting law-abiding gun owners has passed its final legislative hurdle.
“Imposing a backdoor gun registry does nothing to keep Canadians safe. Not only does it fail to address gang violence or target gang criminals, but the word “gang” does not even appear in the bill.
“Conservatives believe in putting dangerous criminals behind bars where they belong, as well as respecting the rights of law-abiding firearms owners.
“A Conservative Government led by Andrew Scheer will get tough on gangs, give law enforcement the tools they need to keep Canadians safe and crack down on illegal gun smuggling. And we will repeal C-71 once and for all.”

« Les libéraux de Justin Trudeau échouent à contrer le crime armé. Au lieu de cela, leur mesure législative qui cible de façon insensée les propriétaires d’armes à feu respectueux des lois a passé le dernier stade législatif.
« Imposer un registre des armes à feu en douce ne fait rien pour assurer la sécurité des Canadiens. Non seulement le projet de loi ne contre pas la violence des gangs et ne cible pas les criminels des gangs, mais il ne comprend pas une seule fois le mot « gang ».
« Les conservateurs pensent que les dangereux criminels doivent être derrière les barreaux, là où est leur place, et qu’il faut respecter les droits des honnêtes propriétaires d’armes à feu.
« Un gouvernement conservateur dirigé par Andrew Scheer sévira face aux gangs, donnera aux forces de l’ordre les outils requis pour assurer la sécurité des Canadiens et s’attaquera à la contrebande d’armes illégales. Et nous abolirons le projet de loi C-71 une bonne fois pour toutes. »

Liberal gun bill passes, firearm owners turn to assault rifle ban

A government bill repealing contentious Conservative changes to Canada’s firearm law cleared its final hurdle in Parliament Tuesday, paving the way for an even tougher battle over guns as the October election approaches.
Bill C-71, strongly opposed by gun lobbies and firearm owners since Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale tabled it in the House of Commons on March 20, 2018, sailed through its final Senate vote with Independent and Liberal senators outnumbering Conservatives and a handful of other opponents 55-33.
Former Conservative Senators Mike Duffy and Pam Wallin, now members of the Independent Senators Group caucus, voted with the Conservatives to oppose the bill.

“This legislation accomplishes nothing of what the government has said it will,” said Conservative Senator Don Plett. “It will not increase public safety, it will not reduce gun violence, and it will not keep firearms out of the hands of criminals. It is regrettable that the so-called independent senators chose to just ram it through.”

Gun owners ‘scared’ about possible ban

Legal gun owners in Canada “are scared right now” that the federal government intends to ban legal firearms.
“There is definitely fear in the gun-owning community,” says Amanda Hare, owner of Oley’s Armoury in Powassan.
Hare says the fear is that “AR-type rifles” will be reclassified as restricted weapons – the same category as handguns.
AR stands for Armalite Rifles, the manufacturer of semi-automatic rifles which resemble the firearms used by numerous militaries around the world, including the Canadian Armed Forces.

New advocacy group forms to push for total ban on semi-automatic weapons in NZ
A new gun control group has been launched today with a mission of encouraging stronger gun laws, tightening controls around gun ownership and completely banning semi-automatic weapons.
Gun Control NZ came about from concern “with modest changes to gun control laws” that swept through Parliament in the wake of the Christchurch shootings, the lobbyist group said in a statement.
The group also intends to campaign for a mandatory gun registry and a shortened registration period for gun owners of 3 years.
“Gun ownership imposes risks on all of us, and our current laws still have many loopholes,” said organisation co-founder Nik Green. “Gun Control NZ wants effective gun laws that keep the entire community safe.”

Six-in-ten Canadians (61%) say they would support an outright ban on civilian possession of handguns – something being pushed for by some of the country’s largest cities. The support level jumps to three-quarters (75%) when considering a ban on assault weapons.“Further, there is significant support for proposals to strengthen elements of the licensing and purchase process, including expanded background checks and comprehensive tracking of gun sale records. This includes majority support from current and former gun owners.”

Not surprisingly, it’s also a given the federal government’s response to the severity of the problem would be lacking. As Western Canadians are well aware, our rural areas have been plagued with dirtbags helping themselves to property and menacing homeowners.
The federal government, spurred by Alberta Conservative MP Shannon Stubbs, formed a parliamentary committee to study the rural crime issue.

New Nanaimo MP taking petition to Ottawa calling for DND rifle range access

Manly will be sworn in on Monday, doubling the number of Green Party of Canada MPs in Ottawa. Party Leader Elizabeth May, the MP for Saanich-Gulf Islands, has been the lone Green MP.
Manly said he aims to introduce the petition “sometime [next] week.”

Detroit Area Gun Rights Community Bands Together To Train Over 800 Women How To Shoot

Detroit, Michigan – -(AmmoLand.com)- Gun rights advocates, from several different organizations, worked together this past weekend on May 19th to train over 800 women how to safely and accurately operate handguns. The program, now in its eighth year, supplied everything that a new firearm operator would need to participate without cost. All training, firearms, range time, and ammunition were donated by sponsors. The event is permanently scheduled to run every year on the first Sunday after Mother’s Day.
The program was launched in 2012 when Rick Ector, a Detroit resident and founder of “Legally Armed In Detroit (LAID),” saw a disturbing news report of a woman’s body being discovered in a deserted field. The story haunted Ector, who felt that something should be done to empower women to protect themselves. He talked to several fellow firearm trainers who were willing to donate their time and expertise. In addition, a local range was willing to donate the needed range space and range time to conduct the program. Ector supplied the firearms and ammunition. The program successfully introduced 50 women to firearm safety and the skills needed to accurately operate a 9mm caliber semi-automatic handgun.

Confronting the Myths about “Arming Teachers”

There is a disproportionate buzz about the newly signed Florida legislation that allows its school districts (each at its own discretion) to authorize concealed carry of firearms by teachers in their schools.
Why disproportionate? Because the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act, signed into law in March 2018 soon after the Parkland mass shooting, had already established the “Coach Aaron Feis Guardian Program” named after the coach who gave his life attempting to shield students with his body during that shooting. That program gave school boards the option of allowing school staff members to carry firearms, excluding most classroom teachers who were not JROTC teachers, or current service members, or current or former law enforcement officers.

Texas bill allows people to open carry guns during natural disasters
AUSTIN, Texas (KTRK) — A new bill that would allow Texans to carry their guns for up to a week after a natural disaster is heading to the Governor’s desk.
The Texas Senate narrowly approved House Bill 1177 on Sunday before the legislative session ends on Monday.
The final vote was 16 to 15.
According to the Dallas Morning News, if House Bill 1177 becomes law, any Texan who legally owns a firearm could carry their handgun, open or concealed, for a week after a state or natural disaster is declared.

Re: “Concerned About Gun Violence” (Courier/Herald, April 30) by South Okanagan-West Kootenay federal Liberal candidate Connie Denesiuk.
Although the recent shootings in Penticton and Salmon Arm are tragic, talk about gun control and political stances around it are very current and timely.
In what democracy should those who are tasked with enforcing laws (executive branch) also create them (Parliament legislative)? Is that not the whole point of maintaining three distinct and separate branches of government?

A couple of months ago, Czech President Milos Zeman made an unusual request: He urged citizens to arm themselves against a possible “super-Holocaust” carried out by Muslim terrorists.
Never mind that there are fewer than 4,000 Muslims in this country of 10 million people — gun purchases spiked. One shop owner in East Bohemia, a region in the northern center of the Czech Republic, told a local paper that people were scared of a “wave of Islamists.”
