Smith announces Inflation Relief Act and suspends fuel tax in Alberta

by

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith took to the airways Tuesday night to advise residents substantial help is on the way and she is suspending the provincial fuel tax.

“We are facing a very difficult time as a country and as a province. We have been through a lot together these past three years, but still have many challenges ahead of us,” Smith said.

“Tonight, I want to address how our government is going to work together with you and your family to overcome these challenges.”

Smith pointed to what she called “record spending and debt by the federal government in Ottawa” contributing to “the inflation and affordability crisis.”

She also said a “continual string of anti-energy policies” has contributed to rising costs of fuel, electricity, heating, food, and other household needs leading to parents having to choose between nutritious food for their children or making their rising mortgage payments.

“Many seniors are choosing between filling their needed prescriptions and fuel for their vehicles. As a province, we can’t solve this inflation crisis on our own, but due to our strong fiscal position and balanced budget, we can offer substantial relief so Albertans and their families are better able to manage through this storm,” Smith said.
