Christmas Day Horror: Taxi Cab Plows Into Pedestrians in NYC’s Herald Square, Multiple Injured

Editor’s note: This story has been updated with additional information.

On Christmas Day, multiple pedestrians were struck by a yellow taxi cab near Herald Square in Midtown Manhattan, injuring six pedestrians, including a 9-year-old boy.

The incident occurred around 4:20 p.m. at the intersection of Sixth Avenue and West 34th Street.

Three victims, including the child, were transported to local hospitals—two to Weill Cornell Medical Center and one to Bellevue Hospital. All hospitalized individuals are reported to be in stable condition. The remaining three pedestrians declined medical attention at the scene, according to AP.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the 58-year-old taxi driver may have experienced a medical episode leading to the crash. The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with authorities.

The New York Police Department is conducting a thorough investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident. At this time, no charges have been filed, and the incident appears to be accidental.

New York Post reported:

A group of good Samaritans helped rescue a 9-year-old boy and his mother after the pair were struck, along with several other pedestrians, by a taxi driver who suffered a possible medical episode in Herald Square Wednesday afternoon, according to police and sources.

The Christmas chaos unfolded outside Macy’s on 34th Street and Sixth Avenue shortly after 4 p.m. when the northbound-traveling driver, 58, jumped a curb at the busy intersection, cops and sources said.
