Spanish authorities charged the African suspect with bodily harm and violation of fundamental rights on religious grounds following an early morning anti-Christian attack in Barcelona.
BARCELONA, Spain (LifeSiteNews) — A woman in Barcelona has been assaulted by a North African migrant after telling him she was a Christian.
According to the Spanish news outlet Gaceta, a 19-year-old man of Maghrebi origin was arrested in Barcelona after an alleged physical assault on a woman. The attack occurred around 2 a.m. near La Rambla in central Barcelona. The attacker reportedly asked the woman about her religion, and when she confirmed that she was Christian, he yelled and called her a “Christian whore” before physically assaulting her.
The woman sustained minor injuries and was assisted by emergency paramedics on the scene. She did not have to be taken to the hospital.
The suspect was arrested by local police and was brought before the judicial authorities for offenses including violation of fundamental rights on religious grounds and bodily harm.
To date, no details have been reported on whether the African man had any previous criminal record.
Anti-Christian attacks of this kind have been on the rise in Europe for several years. According to the Observatory on Intolerance and Discrimination against Christians in Europe (OIDAC), there were 2,211 anti-Christian hate crimes recorded in Europe in 2024, including 274 physical attacks on individuals. The number of arson attacks on churches and other Christian buildings doubled in 2024, compared to the previous year, with 94 reported cases. Germany experienced the highest number of documented arson attacks with 33.
Most anti-Christian crimes in 2024 occurred in France (770), the United Kingdom (502), Germany (337), and Austria (116). According to the report, the crimes range from graffiti on buildings and smashed windows to murder. While the motives for these attacks are often not officially recorded in the current statistics, many observers have noted that the most anti-Christian attacks have occurred in countries with a significantly high number of Muslim immigrants.
