Sweden Moves to GPS-Track Children in Sweeping New Surveillance Push

by David Lindfield

Sweden’s government is moving forward with a controversial proposal that would allow authorities to electronically monitor children as young as 13 using GPS-enabled tracking devices in what critics warn is another major expansion of state surveillance powers.

The proposal, unveiled by Sweden’s Ministry of Social Affairs, would allow social services to place selected youths under electronic monitoring to supposedly prevent them from being “drawn into crime.”

Under the plan, children and young adults between the ages of 13 and 20 could be forced to wear GPS-tracked smart devices designed to monitor their movements and ensure they remain at home during government-mandated hours.

Officials claim the measures are aimed at preventing gang recruitment and violent crime.

Critics, however, warn that the proposal represents a disturbing escalation in government control over minors and family life.

Government Wants GPS Monitoring for ‘At-Risk’ Youths

The Swedish government announced the proposal during a recent press conference, arguing that electronic surveillance would serve as an “early intervention” tool to stop young people from entering criminal networks.

“Electronic surveillance may, in serious cases, be a necessary support,” officials stated.

According to the proposal, social services would gain the authority to require certain youths already known to authorities to remain at home during designated hours while being electronically tracked.

The monitoring could last for up to three months at a time.

Officials estimate between 50 and 100 youths would initially fall under the program.

The devices would reportedly resemble ordinary smart watches or bracelets rather than traditional ankle monitors.
