Mamdani Draws Backlash by Trying to Downplay NYC’s Rape Surge

by David Lindfield

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has come under fire after suggesting that an increase in reported rapes is due in part to an expanded legal definition of the crime, a remark that prompted criticism from lawmakers, activists, and commentators across the political spectrum.

Mamdani made the comments during an interview with PIX11 News while responding to concerns about rising rape and felony assault numbers raised by New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin.

Mamdani Points to Legal Change

Asked about the city’s crime statistics, Mamdani emphasized that the New York Police Department has recorded historically low numbers of murders and shootings before arguing that rape statistics require additional context.

“And what I think is important to know is a lot of the increase in rape also comes from an expanded definition of what counts as rape, as well as survivors coming forward for acts that took place years prior,” Mamdani said.

“And we are thankful for them coming forward, the courage and the bravery it takes, but just to provide New Yorkers with that context.”
