The Muslim world has been tracking Mayor Mamdani in New York City and Abdul El-Sayed, the Democrats’ nominee in Michigan.
Abd Al-Rahman AI-Shammari, a columnist for the Qatari state daily AI-Sharq, compared former President Obama’s rise with Zohran Mamdani and Abdul El-Sayed.
“A few decades ago, the question was whether a Black person could ever rule America. It happened. Then the question was whether a Muslim could rule New York. And it happened. Today, the question is whether a Muslim named Abdulrahman El-Sayed can sit in the Senate. Yes, it is possible.
“The question which comes up after all these questions is much greater and more important. Will there come a day when a Muslim rules the [entire] U.S.?
“Some may laugh at this question. But history is full of [notions] that people once laughed at and are now a reality.
“And here let us recall that boy who grew up in Pharaoh’s palace while Pharaoh’s soldiers were out looking for the children of the Israelites. Sometimes empires are preoccupied with what they fear from without, yet all while the future is already changing from within.
“Fifty years from now, when a historian reads the story of America at the beginning of the 21st Century, the greatest paradox, in his eyes, may not be that America fought so long in the lands of the Muslims. He will write a much more intriguing sentence: while America fought in the world and against Islam, the sons of Muslims and others were quietly paving their way into the heart of the U.S.”
