President Trump on Wednesday threatened Canada and the European Union with “very heavy tariffs” or an end to all trade amid the EU’s plans to welcome Canada as a member.
The move could extend Trump’s trade war with Canada to the EU. Trump has slapped 50% tariffs on Canadian goods and plans to ban some Canadian industries from importing to the US.
“I think it’s laughable … Canada has been a terrible trade partner,” Trump told reporters on the tarmac at Charlotte airport on Wednesday.
“If they do that, and if I think it’s at all a hostile act, I will put very serious tariffs or stop trading with Europe on many things,” he added.
“So, if they do that, if Europe does that with a bad intention— if it’s a good intention, that’s fine. If it’s a bad intention, we’ll put very heavy tariffs on Europe
