A remote stretch of the Arizona-Mexico border descended into chaos after federal agents moved to dismantle a sprawling left-wing encampment that had reportedly halted construction of President Donald Trump’s border wall for weeks.
The confrontation unfolded in Lochiel, Arizona, where roughly 100 activists had established what became known as the “Lochiel Autonomous Zone.” According to footage released Friday by Turning Point USA’s Frontlines team, the encampment featured security checkpoints, supply networks, occupied buildings, dozens of tents, and more than 50 vehicles.
What began as an environmental protest over the removal of several cottonwood trees had grown into an organized effort to obstruct construction of a double-layer border wall.
The dispute began July 27, when contractors cut down three cottonwood trees in the San Rafael Valley. A local protester subsequently climbed into another tree, known as the “Grandmother Tree,” before being detained and released without charges.
Environmental activists have argued that construction threatens wildlife corridors and the surrounding ecosystem. However, the movement soon attracted anarchist organizations and activists from across the country.
Among them was CrimethInc., a self-described network of “aspiring revolutionaries” that published a plan to stop construction and encouraged supporters to relocate to the area with “open-ended plans.”
According to Frontlines, the movement raised nearly $75,000 while expanding its presence along the border.
