Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said a migrant caravan traveling north through Mexico has “zero chance” of entering the United States, pledging that the Trump administration will deploy additional federal resources to the southern border if necessary.
“The caravan has zero chance of coming into our country,” Mullin said during an interview with Fox News. “We have the most secure border in the nation, and we’re going to keep it that way.”

The caravan, which departed San Pedro Sula, Honduras, on Sept. 20, numbered in the hundreds as of Monday and is predominantly made up of people from Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Ecuador and Haiti. It has crossed into Mexico and is traveling north toward the U.S.-Mexico border.
Mullin said the Department of Homeland Security has been tracking the group and working with the Mexican government as migrants continue north.
“We actually have been watching this caravan for quite some time,” Mullin said. “They’re also participating in helping to start to break this caravan up.”
Mullin said Mexican officials understand the group will not be permitted to enter the United States illegally and argued that the caravan could instead become an issue for Mexico.
“They understand that they’re going to have a crisis on their border, not our border,” Mullin said.
DHS previously said U.S. Border Patrol was working with international partners to monitor the caravan and warned that migrants who attempt to illegally enter the United States would be apprehended, prosecuted and removed.
Mullin said the administration could shift resources from across DHS to the southern border, including Coast Guard personnel, if the caravan continues toward the United States.
