Japan is preparing to issue an alarming emergency order urging citizens to stockpile food, water, and essential supplies so they can survive for days without government assistance if “war” or “disaster” suddenly strikes.
Disaster Management Minister Goshi Hosono said the nationwide order will be issued November 2, when Japan’s new National Disaster Management Agency is scheduled to begin operations.
Speaking in comments reported by Japanese broadcaster FNN on October 27, Hosono said households should prepare to manage independently for at least three days.
A full week of supplies would be preferable.
The appeal focuses on Japan’s exposure to major earthquakes and other natural disasters that can sever electricity, water, transportation, and access to stores.
Households Told to Prepare a Week of Supplies
Government guidance recommends approximately three-quarters of a gallon of drinking water per person each day, alongside a minimum three-day food reserve.
Families able to do so are encouraged to build reserves lasting seven days.
Rice, canned food, dried meals, and other long-lasting supplies are recommended to help households remain self-sufficient when normal deliveries and services break down.
The preparations also extend to sanitation.
Residents are advised to keep portable toilets or toilet bags, allowing for approximately five uses per person daily, an essential precaution when water supplies or sewer services are disrupted.
Emergency Backpacks Should Be Ready to Grab
Households are also encouraged to prepare an accessible emergency backpack containing a flashlight, spare batteries, a power bank, first-aid supplies, prescription medicines, a whistle, and cash in small denominations.
Those items can become critical when communications fail, electronic payments stop working, or families must leave home quickly.
Japan has long urged residents to maintain emergency reserves. The new request puts fresh emphasis on preparing before a crisis leaves households without basic services.
