True Grit is a 1969 American western film. It is the first film adaptation of Charles Portis’ 1968 novel of the same name. The screenplay was written by Marguerite Roberts. The film was directed by Henry Hathaway and starred Kim Darby as Mattie Ross and John Wayne as U.S. Marshal Rooster Cogburn. Wayne won his only Academy Award for his performance in this film and reprised his role for the 1975 sequel Rooster Cogburn.

Historians believe Cogburn was based on Deputy U.S. Marshal Heck Thomas, who brought in some of the toughest outlaws. The cast also features Glen Campbell, Robert Duvall, Dennis Hopper, Jeff Corey and Strother Martin. The title song, sung by Campbell, was also Oscar-nominated.

‘Love them, accept them, befriend them’: Trudeau continues B.C. tour at Vancouver Pride

A weekend tour of British Columbia continued for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Sunday as he spoke at a Pride breakfast in Vancouver before marching in the annual Pride parade.

He told the audience gathered at the Junction Pub in Vancouver’s Davie Village that while many places in the world could do with more tolerance, Canada should move beyond simply tolerating the differences in its communities and choose to love them.

“No religion in the world says ‘Tolerate thy neighbour,’ it’s love them, accept them, befriend them,” Trudeau said in front of a rainbow-coloured banner.

Trudeau was flanked onstage by longtime Vancouver Centre MP Hedy Fry and PFLAG Canada’s Vancouver chapter president Colin McKenna.

McKenna thanked Trudeau for the apology the prime minister offered to the LGBTQ community in the House of Commons last November for decades of discrimination.

Trudeau awarded for LGBT advocacy: ‘I will fight with you’

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau vowed to continue advancing the homosexual, bisexual, lesbian and and transgender agenda when receiving an award Thursday night from the homosexual activist lobby group, Egale Canada.

“I am on your side. I will fight for you, and I will fight with you,” Trudeau told those gathered at the Toronto Hilton for the Egale Identity Gala, according to Canadian Press.

“Our entire government is committed to full equality for the queer community. You have my word on that.”

Trudeau received a standing ovation from the crowd in the rainbow-hued hotel ballroom as he went up to receive Egale’s inaugural leadership award for LGBTQ advocacy.

Russia appoints actor Steven Seagal as ‘special representative’

The Russian Foreign Ministry said Saturday that it has appointed American actor Steven Seagal as a “special representative” for Russian-American humanitarian relations.

“The task is to promote the further development of Russian-American relations in the humanitarian sphere, including interaction in the field of culture, art, public and youth exchanges and more,” the ministry said on its official Facebook page, according to a CNN translation of the post.

The ministry also said the position is comparable to that of a United Nations goodwill ambassador.

Seagal became a Russian citizen in 2016. He is reportedly close with Russian President Vladimir Putin and attended his swearing-in ceremony in May.
