Liberals Drink More than Conservatives

If the Democrats want to change their slogan from “the party of inclusion” to “the party of cocktails!”, there’s research that will back them up. A new study from the Journal of Wine Economics shows that states that lean left tend to consume more spirits and beer than states with a more conservative bent.

Two economists from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh reviewed data from 1952 to 2010, comparing relative shipments of alcohol that arrived in each state with “citizen ideologies,” determined by factors such as vote results for congressional races. “Holding everything else constant, our findings suggest that when a state becomes more liberal politically, its population consumes more beer and spirits per capita,” the authors write. New Hampshire residents, for instance, swill far more hard liquor per capita than Americans making their homes in Utah and Arkansas.

Micro Stamping

Gun World co-owner Joseph Ferrero is telling customers it’s their last chance to buy some semiautomatic handguns including a .40-caliber Smith & Wesson M&P or a 9 mm Ruger LC9 because “California has effectively banned” them.

The guns, which will remain legal for sale in other states, are being snapped up as enthusiasts at his Burbank store try to get ahead of tightening restrictions that firearms makers say amount to an indirect and unconstitutional ban in the largest U.S. state.

California is the first to bar retailers from selling new models of semiautomatic handguns not equipped to imprint the weapon’s make, model and serial number on the cartridge when a bullet is fired. While microstamping technology is popular with law enforcement to help deter or solve crime, manufacturers Smith & Wesson Holding Corp. (SWHC:US) and Sturm Ruger & Co. (RGR:US) say they won’t use it even if it means their guns can’t be sold in California.

Illegal immigrants ‘earned’ right to be citizens

On Friday, Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson told the United States Conference of Mayors the 11 million or so illegal immigrants in the country have earned the right to be citizens, CNS News reported.

“An earned path to citizenship for those currently present in this country is a matter of, in my view, homeland security to encourage people to come out from the shadows,” he said.

“It is also, frankly, in my judgment, a matter of who we are as Americans,” he added, “to offer the opportunity to those who want to be citizens, who’ve earned the right to be citizens, who are present in this country–many of whom came here as children–to have the opportunity that we all have to try to become American citizens.”
