Democrat Guesteva Rivera wants Illegals to Vote
It seems the word “illegal” doesn’t mean much to one Democrat lawmaker in New York. State Senator Guesteva Rivera recently proposed a bill that would give a long list of benefits to illegal aliens– including the ability to vote in state and local elections.
“With failure at the national level on comprehensive immigration reform, the question we have asked is what can states do?” he asked.
Apparently, his solution to the problem if immigration is to simply shrug and give them anything they want. Immigration law expert Michael Olivas, a law professor at the University of Houston called the bill unprecedented. “It’s mind-boggling,” Olivas said in an interview. “I don’t believe there’s ever been a serious attempt to codify so many benefits and opportunities.”
Even though Rivera seems to genuinely believe that is proposal is smart, he at least admits that it probably won’t happen. He has acknowledged that there isn’t enough support in New York to make the bill become law.
However, Rivera indicated that his proposal was just the beginning – He said the bill could be a model for additional states to follow, and pointed to homosexual marriage as a template for success with illegal immigration reform.
