Sen.-Elect Tom Cotton: No Funding for Social Security Cards, Work Permits for Illegals

Republican Arkansas Sen.-elect Tom Cotton said Congress should prohibit the federal government from issuing work permits, Social Security numbers, and federal IDs to illegal immigrants who may be soon granted executive amnesty.

On Fox News Sunday, Cotton said Congress used its power of the purse “thousands of times over our history” to “control how taxpayer dollars are spent to put limitations on what a president can do.” Republicans opposed to Obama’s forthcoming executive amnesty have insisted that Congress prevent federal dollars from being spent to enact it.

“There’s no reason that we can’t find all our immigration agencies and law enforcement agencies, yet not let the president use taxpayer dollars to get Social Security numbers and work permits and federal IDs to illegal immigrants,” Cotton said, noting that Congress has “fully funded our military spending bills for the last six years and put restrictions” on the White House’s ability to close down Guantanamo.

Cotton, who said that “immigration was a central issue in my campaign,” which he won by 17 points, mentioned that incumbent Senate Democrats like Kay Hagan (NC), Mark Begich (AK), and Mark Udall (CO) who “all supported President Obama’s amnesty bill” lost their respective reelection bids. In addition, Cotton mentioned that Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA) “is about to lose” in a runoff after having supported the Senate’s “Gang of Eight” amnesty bill and Greg Orman, Alison Grimes, Bruce Braley, and Michelle Nunn lost their Senate bids by supporting Obama’s amnesty agenda. He also mentioned that voters in progressive Oregon “voted 2-1 against driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants.”

“So, the American people have spoken loudly about the kind of immigration reform they want and it’s not what the president is proposing,” Cotton said.

During his campaign, Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL), who has led the charge in Congress against Obama’s executive amnesty, praised Cotton as “one of the most powerful voices in Congress for American sovereignty and the rule of law” who gave pro-amnesty interests “the boot” when they came knocking on his door.

“He has proven his loyalty is to you and your family — not the denizens of Wall Street and Washington who shoved this massive amnesty scheme through the Senate with the support of every single Senate Democrat,” Sessions said of Cotton.
