White House: Obama Sees ‘Emperor’ Label As ‘Badge Of Honor’

Reporters grill Press Secretary, ask if Obama sees himself as ‘King’

In a remarkable exchange, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest told gathered reporters Wednesday that President Obama looks upon being criticised as an ‘emperor’ as “a badge of honor”.

Responding to a question regarding Republican criticism of Obama’s executive amnesty plans, Earnest said “We’ve heard this rhetoric for some time.”

“Their most recent statement referred to ‘Emperor Obama,’” Earnest said, adding “The fact is the president is somebody who is willing to examine the law, review the law and use every element of that law to make progress for the American people and that’s a criticism the president wears with badge of honor.”

Obama is set to announce the extremely controversial executive agenda tonight, then he will travel to Las Vegas in an attempt to garner support for the measure.

When asked about the legality of giving 5 million illegal immigrants executive amnesty, Earnest replied “We’ll have ample opportunity to discuss legal basis for the president’s executive actions once he’s announced them.”

Earlier in the week, reporters asked Secretary Earnest if Obama thinks he is an emperor.

ABC reporter Jonathan Karl referred to the numerous times in the past that Obama commented on how he doesn’t have legal authority to bypass Congress and declare amnesty. In February last year Obama even said, “I’m not the emperor of the United States. My job is to execute laws that are passed.”

Just one month prior to that, the president stated in an interview “I think it is important to remind everybody that, as I said I think previously, and I’m not a king. I am the head of the executive branch of government. I’m required to follow the law.”

At the press briefing Tuesday, ABC’s Karl asked Earnest, “Does the president still stand by what he said last year when he said, ‘I am not the emperor of the United States. My job is to execute laws that are passed.’ Is that still operative?”

“Absolutely,” Earnest replied.

“Not a king, either?” asked Karl, prompting laughter from other reporters.

“That’s right,” said Earnest replied.

Unfortunately for Obama, the rest of the nation does not agree. “He is an emperor and he’s going to prove it whenever he does this,” said syndicated radio host Rush Limbaugh Wednesday, echoing broad sentiment.

Calling Obama a “sociopathic liar”, Limbaugh added “Obama knows everything he’s doing. He knows who he lies to. He knows why he lies, and he knows he’s going to get away with it. He knows he’s not going to be called on it… You’re not going to stop Obama by pointing out his … hypocrisy.” Limbaugh explained.

“The point is much larger than Obama is a hypocrite. He is exactly what he claims that he is not. And he knows the American people are not ready for a dictator or an authoritarian or a statist. He knows the American people wouldn’t support that. And that’s why he’s gotta lie. … He knows he’s violating the Constitution and he’s happy to do it, by the way.” the firebrand radio host added.

The emperor label is now being bandied around openly by lawmakers. In a statement Tuesday, Senator Jeff Sessions wrote “President Obama previously said he could not issue an executive amnesty because ‘I’m the President of the United States, I’m not the emperor of the United States. My job is to execute laws that are passed.’ Well, apparently we now have an ‘Emperor of the United States.’”

Michael Steel, the spokesman for Republican House Speaker John Boehner, issued a similar statement condemning the amnesty plan.

“If ‘Emperor Obama’ ignores the American people and announces an amnesty plan that he himself has said over and over again exceeds his Constitutional authority, he will cement his legacy of lawlessness and ruin the chances for Congressional action on this issue – and many others,” Steel said.

The statement came on the heels of a list, released by Boehner’s staff, of 22 times that Obama has said the president has limited powers, and can’t act on his own.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) also published an op-ed in Politico titled “Obama Is Not A Monarch” that similarly criticized the president’s plan as “lawless.”

“Undeterred, President Obama appears to be going forward. It is lawless. It is unconstitutional. He is defiant and angry at the American people. If he acts by executive diktat, President Obama will not be acting as a president, he will be acting as a monarch,” Cruz wrote.
