Dems rally around Boehner to thwart GOP coup
‘Some of these characters came here thinking they’re going to change the world’

Democrats are vowing to rally around House Speaker John Boehner and protect him from any storm of tea party-type challenge that could come due to his perceived cavings to President Obama, the latest of which involved a clean Homeland Security funding bill being brought to the floor.

Staunch Republicans wanted to use that bill as a means of pressing the president to stop his executive actions on amnesty. Passing it effectively put a halt to any immigration challenge, and those on the right in the Republican Party aren’t happy.

Still any move to oust Boehner, who just won re-election to his speaker post, won’t go forward with Democrat help, The Hill reported. In fact, Democrats say they’d much rather keep Boehner – he’s a lot more palatable than a tea party type.

“I’d probably vote for Boehner [because] who the hell is going to replace him? [Ted] Yoho? In terms of the institution, I would rather have John Boehner as the speaker than some of these characters who came here thinking that they’re going to change the world,” said Rep. Bill Pascrell, a N.J. Democrat, in The Hill.

Rep. Raul Grijalva, a hard left Democrat, agreed.

“Then we would get Scalise or somebody? Geez, come on,” he said, picturing Boehner’s replacement as Majority Whip Steve Scalise from Louisiana. “We can be suicidal, but not stupid.”

Boehner has fought off near-constant tea party attacks since he took over the speaker’s slot in 2011. The latest attempt to strip him of his gavel came at the beginning of the year, when 25 Republicans voted to oust him. They failed, and shortly after, several saw their committee posts and assignments dropped or altered.

But tea-party lawmakers aren’t giving up the fight.

Fully 167 Republicans refused to vote for the clean DHS funding bill. It only passed on the backs of 75 GOPers, and all the Democrats. And during discussion of the bill, several tea-party lawmakers warned that they would consider a move to oust Boehner if he did in fact cave to the Democrat-driven demand for a clean bill.

One who declined to give his name said the coup may not come right away but “it’s a long year,” The Hill reported.
