Piers Morgan’s Good Morning Britain guest stint was so successful he may be offered permanent deal

The controversial journalist pulled in 50,000 more viewers while standing in for Ben Shephard and may even join Susanna Reid as regular co-anchor

Piers Morgan proved such a hit in his guest stint on Good Morning Britain last week that show bosses are thinking about making him a permanent fixture.

The controversial journalist pulled in 50,000 more viewers while standing in for Ben Shephard and could even join Susanna Reid as regular co-anchor.

ITV chiefs had admitted they were taking a gamble on Morgan, 50, who has been described as a “Marmite figure”.

But insiders claim they are delighted with the reaction from viewers.

A source told the Sunday People: “Piers’ stint was seen as testing the water, he passed with flying colours.

“He struck up great chemistry with Susanna and was a shot in the arm for the show.

“There is talk about him landing his own show or even returning to a more permanent role on GMB.”

One idea being considered for Morgan, who fronts ITV’s Life Stories, is his own chat show.

The former Britain’s Got Talent judge spent three years in the US fronting a nightly CNN show after replacing legend Larry King, but it was axed last year after ratings slumped.

He stood in on GMB while Shephard, 40, was working on new show Ninja Warrior.

Reid, 44, described Morgan as a “force of nature” and said working with him was like going “through a tornado”.

An ITV spokesman added: “It worked well with Piers.”
