The local fire district advised people to stay away from Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, about 180 miles south of Portland. It later tweeted that there were “multiple casualties” but didn’t elaborate.
CBS News reports at least 10 people are dead and that 20 people were injured. Six people are in critical condition.
CBS News reports that the shooter is down. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office says the threat is over.
The first call about a shooting at the college in Roseburg came into the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office at 10:37 a.m.
The campus is on lockdown, but the sheriff’s office says there is no active threat at the school.
The community college is a gun-free campus.
“Possession, use, or threatened use of firearms (including but not limited to BB guns, air guns, water pistols, and paint guns) ammunition, explosives, dangerous chemicals, or any other objects as weapons on college property, except as expressly authorized by law or college regulations, is prohibited,” the college’s security policy states.
Umpqua Community College has about 3,000 students. Its website was down Thursday, and a phone message left at the school wasn’t immediately returned.
A spokeswoman for the Oregon department that oversees community colleges in the state said she had not received any detailed information about the shooting.
“It’s extremely concerning and sad,” said Endi Hartigan, spokeswoman for the Oregon Higher Education Coordinating Commission.
