Sophie Trudeau Faces Backlash After Revealing She Needs More Staff
Sophie Gregoire-Trudeau is once again facing backlash from some Canadians.
After revealing to a newspaper that she’s struggling to keep up with her heavy workload, Canucks took to Twitter to share their opinions on the much sought-after wife of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
In an interview with Le Soleil this week, Trudeau said she and her assistant can’t handle the current demands of being the wife of a highly-visible prime minister, which involve being asked to speak at various events and promote many organizations and charities.
These numerous requests are currently not able to be handled, said Trudeau, because of her small staff.
“I’d like to be everywhere, but I can’t,” Trudeau told Le Soleil. “I have three children at home and a husband who is Prime Minister. I need help. I need a team to help me serve people.”
Not everyone agrees.
Many people took issue with the fact that if she was given more staff, Canadian taxpayers would be paying for it. On top of that, even though she is the wife of the prime minister, she has no official duties, unlike the first lady in the U.S.
If Sophie Trudeau wants a larger staff to help w/her responsibilities, kids & job, other working moms shouldn’t have to pay for it. #cdnpoli

Oh are you a busy parent with a busy spouse? What you need is more taxpayer-funded assistants. #cdnpoli

Sophie Trudeau has NO official duties. She’s a stay-at-home Mom with a driver, chef, two nannies and cleaning staff. https://t.co/ajwK749nQL

There is no First Lady in #Canada. #Trudeau high flying public funded lifestyle too much. Sophie can pay for her own staff. #cdnpoli#LPC

Even Sophie Gregoire-Trudeau is off her rocker. She thinks we should pay 4 her staff even tho her role is not required. Who does that???

We should have a telethon to raise money to get Sophie Trudeau the help she needs. #PrayForSophie#SophieStrongpic.twitter.com/IyUJDDwUs9

However, others were more sympathetic towards Trudeau, pointing out that she has many responsibilities as the wife of the prime minister, is a mother-of-three and only has a small staff (including two nannies) with which to help her complete her tasks.
In response to Trudeau’s remarks, the Prime Minister’s Office told The Globe and Mail that they were looking into whether they will add to her staff to help with her workload.
This isn’t the first time Trudeau has come under fire for the members of her staff.
Late last year, she and the PM were criticized for hiring two taxpayer-funded nannies for their three children, Hadrien, Xavier and Ella-Grace.
In May, it was revealed that the cost of Trudeau’s child care would almost hit $100,000 a year, which also invited criticism.
