Armed Bystanders Stop Shooting At Maine Walmart

Have armed bystanders ever prevented a mass shooting?

Liberals will tell you that there’s never been a mass public shooting ended by a “good guy with a gun,” but they’re being a bit misleading when they say this. The reason we don’t see mass public shootings ended by armed bystanders is because when armed bystanders are nearby, they don’t allow a mass shooting to occur in the first place – so there’s no mass shooting to end.

The same goes for deterrence in general. The reason so few people are killed by firearms each year in self-defense is because brandishing the weapon in the first place tends to diffuse the situation. You’re much more likely to hear about gun violence in the news than a gun owner preventing a crime – which is hardly surprising. The media needs to sensationalize – so it’s no wonder that most Americans believe that gun violence has increased since the nineties when in reality it’s been cut in half.

Here’s just one of those cases of a good guy with a gun stopping bad guys with a gun that you often see glossed over. WCSH6 reports:

Augusta Police say two bystanders legally armed with handguns stepped in during a shooting incident at a Walmart in Augusta.

Police say four suspects were taken into custody by police Sunday after allegedly firing gunshots in the parking lot of a Walmart.

Police said the suspects involved were sitting in vehicles parked next to each other when an altercation arose. The occupants of one vehicle fired at the occupants of the other, which resulted in a return in gunfire.

When the shooting stopped, police said one suspect exited their vehicle to confront the occupants of the other vehicle. This is when two bystanders, who were legally carrying, interfered and stopped the incident, police said.

Here are pictures of the suspects:

While this wasn’t your typical planned mass public shooting, it could’ve easily turned into one due to innocent bystanders who would’ve become victims. With police minutes away, we’re all lucky there were armed citizens nearby.

And the statistics back up the claim that armed citizens are best to diffuse situations like these. According to calculations by Davi Barker, the average number of people killed in mass shootings when stopped by police is 14.29. When stopped by citizens? Only 2.33. Seconds matter.
