Cruz Tries Sick Trick During RNC Speech, But Gets Instant Justice Instead

No, Ted — unfortunately for you, they weren’t saying “Cruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuzz.”

Sen. Ted Cruz, once a conservative favorite whose acrimonious relationship with Donald Trump made headlines late in the primary season and cost him his base, was booed off stage Wednesday night at the Republican National Convention after he refused to endorse Trump’s candidacy during his speech.

According to The Hill, Sen. Cruz’s remarks that convention attendees should “vote your conscience” began a cascade of boos that morphed into a chant of “We want Trump!”

Cruz originally tried to laugh it off, joking that, “I appreciate the enthusiasm from the New York delegation.”

The jeers and chants of the audience eventually overwhelmed Sen. Cruz, especially when Donald Trump made a surprise appearance on the convention floor to go up to his suite.

Here’s video of the debacle:

Sen. Ted Cruz has fought the good fight on behalf of conservatives for years in the Senate. I get that. I also get that he’s been a reliable member of the conservative movement for years.

I don’t know what the motives for Cruz’s speech were. I tend to think he’s already printing up the “Cruz 2020” T-shirts and yard signs, and a Trump victory would put that on hold.

Whatever his reasons, it’s worth pointing out something else. Last year, Ted Cruz signed a pledge promising to support the GOP nominee in the 2016 presidential election.

That pledge was ostensibly designed by the Republican establishment to prevent Donald Trump from running as a third-party candidate. However, things have changed, and Trump is now the nominee.

It’s time for Cruz to honor the pledge that he signed. He would have expected Trump to do the same had he not won, and the fact that he showed up at the Republican National Convention peddling his “Never Trump” agenda proves that Cruz cannot be held to his word.

If Cruz is one of the people who weaken Trump’s candidacy and end up giving the election to Hillary Clinton, all of the stands he has made for conservatism in the Senate will be for naught, and his reputation will be permanently damaged — if it hasn’t been already.
