‘Shotgun Wedding’: Texas Jeweler Offers Free Gun With Ring Purchase
A South Plains jewelry store has decided to extend its “Shotgun Wedding Sale” due to an overwhelming response to the campaign that drew national attention last week.
The owners of Thacker Jewelry in Lubbock, Texas, made national headlines last week when they announced their promotion to give away a shotgun or rifle to any person qualified to own a gun who bought an engagement ring. The response to the 3-day sale was so overwhelming, store owner Joe Thacker decided to extend the event through Saturday, November 5.
“We started this tradition I believe it was, it’ll be three years now,” Thacker told KLBK. “The idea, of course, is the word play and the old shotgun wedding. Not going back to the negative connotation playing off of that and it’s been a lot of fun. We had a lot of people participate and this year we’ve even gotten into it more.”
Everything in the store was reported to be on sale, but a special offer was extended to those who might be wishing to pop the question. Any person purchasing an engagement ring will receive a gift certificate to purchase a rifle or shotgun from LSG Tactical, a Lubbock gun store.
Any person wishing to take advantage of the offer will have to pass the normal firearms background check at LSG Tactical prior to redeeming their gift certificate.
LSG Tactical gun store owner Steve Burns told the Pace he was not surprised at the success of the marketing program. “It’s something that’s very natural for most Texans,” he explained. “Most guys grew up hunting or at least exposed to hunting if not by their family, but by their friends, or social groups. So it’s something that’s pretty natural for all of us.”
Of course, any jewelry must be accessorized. To complement the engagement ring for Second Amendment loving bride-to-be, Thacker also offers a line of line of diamond-studded Winchester earrings and necklaces.
In a Facebook post, Thacker wrote, “Hunting season is coming up. Whether you’re stalking a bird or a bride … Thacker has you covered.”
Facebook user Jim Baxa responded, “Gotta love west Texas. … Hey, you need a household defense weapon to defend your new family!”
And George McAdoo added, “I hope this catches on nation wide. Best marketing idea ever. Thanks Thacker Jewelry.”
