Trump win prompts anti-immigrant Italian politician to run for prime minister

Bolstered by President-elect Trump’s surprise win this week, Matteo Salvini, the head of Italy’s anti-immigrant Northern League party, announced on Saturday that he would run to be the country’s next prime minister.

In announcing his run, Salvini spoke to a crowd of about 10,000 people about his plans to protect domestic goods and shut out illegal immigrants, Reuters reported.

“If Brexit and Trump’s victory teach us something it is that it’s not the time to be afraid,” he said.

Salvini met with Trump for about 20 minutes in Philadelphia in April. Trump reportedly told the Italian politician that he hoped he would become the prime minister of Italy.

The Daily Beast called Salvini Italy’s “most racist politician.”

If elected, Salvini’s win would be the third major populist movement that surprisingly succeeded. Earlier this year, the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union, and just this week, Trump was elected president of the U.S.
