Hillary Clinton: ‘Lives are at risk’ as fake news spreads

Hillary Clinton called the rampant spread of fake news “an epidemic” that “can have real world consequences” if left unaddressed, during an interview on Thursday.

The former Democratic presidential nominee said false news reports have “flooded social media over the past year,” according to CNN. One of those stories involved a false story saying Clinton and her team were involved in running a child sex ring.

“This is not about politics or partisanship. Lives are at risk, lives of ordinary people just trying to go about their days to do their jobs, contribute to their communities,” Clinton told reporters after speaking at a portrait unveiling for Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid. “It is a danger that must be addressed and addressed quickly.”

The Washington appearance was one of a handful of times Clinton has been in public since her defeat a month ago. “After a few weeks of taking selfies in the woods I thought it would be a good idea to come out,” Clinton joked. “And I am very grateful to Harry for inviting me to be part of this celebration.”
