Sacramento Gives Free Cars to Public Housing Residents. Free CARS.
By: John Nolte
In today’s episode of “Why The Hell Do I Bother To Work For a Living,” we learn that the city of Sacramento, California, has decided to purchase a fleet of cars that will be made available, free of charge, to 300 residents already using that city’s public housing.
The $1.3 million used to pay for what the Sacramento Bee calls a “mini fleet,” came from the state’s California Environmental Protection Agency, which in turn got the money by blackmailing local businesses with cap-and-trade fines.
Gas, maintenance and insurance will also be paid for by the state, which can only mean that the $1.3 million is just the beginning of yet-another very expensive government debacle, but one that will never be repealed because if you take away people’s free cars they will die.
Naturally, the cars are electric cars and come from a private company called Zipcars, a company that appears to be all about making a bundle off your tax dollars by selling to touchy-feely governments the touchy-feely idea that sharing cars is a good idea.
And since we are talking about California, I think we can all agree, then, that if it is a good idea to use your tax dollars to purchase sharing cars, using your tax dollars to purchase electric cars is an even better idea; which means nothing can top the inspired idea using your tax dollars to buy electric cars for public housing residents, amiright?
Can you feel the Utopia?
Reach out, it is right there in front of you.
What seems especially odd is that while left-wing governments are doing everything in their power to discourage car ownership for those of us who, you know, actually buy our own cars, these same governments are now using our confiscated tax dollars to give cars away for free. Moreover, the whole idea that electric cars are better for the environment is yet another whopper told by the High Church of the Gaia Green Cult.
Where do you think all that electricity comes from to charge an electric car’s battery?
But those smokestacks, many attached to coal-fired power plants, are the single-largest source of greenhouse gas pollution in the U.S., at two billion metric tons of CO2 per year. That source would grow as electric cars demand more and more electricity, unless tighter pollution controls are placed on power plants or electric utilities shift to less polluting sources such as solar. As it stands, a conventional Toyota Prius hybrid vehicle, which burns gasoline when its batteries are not engaged, and the all-electric Nissan Leaf produce roughly the same amount of greenhouse gas pollution: 200 grams per mile, according to data from the U.S. Department of Energy.
And if you want to know the appalling condition these electric cars will soon find themselves in, look at the appalling condition of public housing. As a whole, people do not take as good of care of something they rent as opposed to own. That is just human nature. Who among us has not used our rental car to spin donuts in a cornfield? But when you are not even paying for it — when it is provided free of charge courtesy of the taxpayers, it ends up looking like, well, public housing.
That truth might not be politically correct, but that doesn’t change the fact that it is true.
Listen, I am all in favor of taking care of those who cannot take care of themselves, and I am also in favor of some kind of public safety net to temporarily help those who are able to take care of themselves when misfortune strikes. Public housing is neither — public housing is nothing more than our government warehousing the poor, sentencing them to a horrible life that strips away their human spirit through the dark art of “taking care of all their needs,” and now, like a street dealer upping the power of his drug, the government is further incentivizing this terrible idea with the lure of free cars.
Forget how wildly unfair this all is to those of who have to pay for our own transportation. Forget how ludicrous it is for a government to purchase cars for people.
The State is now telling its citizens that a car is a Right, not a luxury you must work for; that if you want a car, there is no need to aspire. All you need do is hold your nose and take the plunge into the State’s Socialist Utopia Net where there is only one thing expected of you: keep voting against those evil Republicans who want to take away your Constitutional right to an electric car.
