Canadians Might Be Forced to Call Transgenders by Preferred Pronouns

Don’t be too smug, Americans.

Who would’ve thought that grammar could land you in legal hot water? That’s exactly what will happen in Canada these days, if the totalitarians — er, liberals get their way.

Transgender activists there are now demanding that others use their preferred pronouns – a preference that might change every day, or even every hour, depending on how they “identify.” The Daily Caller explains how this ever-changing preference now might be enshrined into law in Canada:

Canada passed a law Thursday making it illegal to use the wrong gender pronouns. Critics say that Canadians who do not subscribe to progressive gender theory could be accused of hate crimes, jailed, fined, and made to take anti-bias training.

Canada’s Senate passed Bill C-16, which puts “gender identity” and “gender expression” into both the country’s Human Rights Code, as well as the hate crime category of its Criminal Code by a vote of 67-11, according to LifeSiteNews. The bill now only needs royal assent from the governor general.

To celebrate, Canada’s prime minister Justin Trudeau tweeted:

In New York City, the government will punish employers, landlords, businesses, and professionals who use the “wrong” pronoun. Here’s how the New York City Human Rights Commission describes a “violation” of its human-rights law: “Refusal to use an individual’s preferred name, pronoun, or title because they do not conform to gender stereotypes. For example, calling a woman ‘Mr.’ because her appearance is aligned with traditional gender-based stereotypes of masculinity.”

Even worse, the Obama administration put the issue of pronouns front and center in every federally funded educational institution in the United States. It issued guidance (since repealed, though the issue is far from resolved) containing clear language mandates:

Under Title IX, a school must treat students consistent with their gender identity even if their education records or identification documents indicate a different sex. The Departments have resolved Title IX investigations with agreements committing that school staff and contractors will use pronouns and names consistent with a transgender student’s gender identity.

French goes on to say, “This is, to put it bluntly, compelled speech. It’s a violation of the rights of conscience of the speaker. It’s an effort by the government to coerce verbal agreement with a contested and contentious personal, religious, cultural, and scientific debate.” In other words, we don’t need to look at our Canadian neighbors and ask what’s going on. We need to take a hard look at our so-called political leaders and demand that the first amendment not take a back seat to the ever-changing whims of political correctness.
