Media Ignore Poll Showing Guns, Immigration More Important than Gender Equality, LGBT

Shaping the narrative one newscast at a time.

There’s a recent Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll that has been largely ignored by the media, or at the very least cherry-picked to support the preferred narrative, since it came out in August.

The study was of 1200 adults, the majority female and white, and mostly registered voters. The survey is interesting because the issue of guns and immigration topped the list, while gender equality and gay rights were way at the bottom, despite the priority the media puts on those things.

Here’s how the issues stacked up in the poll:

Notice it says, “gun rights or gun control,” so, it’s hard to know how many fell on which side of the debate. However, The Daily Caller’s commentary puts it into proper perspective:

Subsequent questions make it clear that gun rights supporters are not only more likely to be voting on the issue but are growing in number. When asked which of two statements was more concerning, a majority said: “The government will go too far in restricting the rights of citizens to own guns.” …

Driving this pro-Second Amendment sentiment is an increase in the number of respondents saying they have a gun in the household. As we have discussed here before, there is an understandable reluctance to report firearm ownership on public opinion surveys. While the 48 percent figure reported in this poll is likely lower than reality, it is worth noting the upward trend in households with firearms.

But don’t expect to see numbers like that appear on the nightly news, nor the other numbers the media has ignored, such as the 57% positive feelings people have about the U.S. economy.

Newsbusters points out that outlets like NBC News weren’t keen on showing its own poll numbers, especially about Hillary Clinton. Before the election, Clinton’s popularity was much higher on the scale:

40% positive/very positive
50% negative/very negative

According to this new survey, folks’ attitude toward Clinton has worsened:

30% positive/very positive
53% negative/very negative

That’s not good for book sales!

Newsbusters also noted that Today’s Savannah Guthrie didn’t touch those updated figures when she interviewed Clinton on her book tour. Nor did Chuck Todd, who “has cited other numbers from this August poll on Meet the Press – both on September 3 and on September 17. But not these numbers.”

Related exit thought: the public domain picture above is captioned, “Training in marksmanship helps girls at Roosevelt High School in Los Angeles, Calif., develop into responsible women.” That is remarkably telling of how far we’ve fallen as a society. A teenager with a gun inside a school and that was normal back in the day. Can you imagine how quick the entire city of L.A. would shut down if that picture were recent?
