FDA Thugs Issue Outrageous Orders to Local Bakery…This Is Tyranny
An official with the Food and Drug Administration sent a letter to a small bakery in Massachusetts last month demanding its co-owners John D. Gates and Stuart J. Witt stop listing “love” as an ingredient for their granola.
“Your Nashoba Granola label lists ingredient ‘Love,” wrote FDA official Ronald Pace to the co-owners of Nashoba Brook Bakery as part of a longer letter that, admittedly, listed many other legitimate violations as well. “Ingredients required to be declared on the label or labeling of food must be listed by their common or usual name.”
“‘Love’ is not a common or usual name of an ingredient, and is considered to be intervening material because it is not part of the common or usual name of the ingredient,” he added.
Is Pace serious? Sadly, yes, which just goes to show government overreach is all too real, as noted by Gates in a statement to the Associated Press.
“It taps this feeling that a lot of Americans have that there are ways in which the government can overreach, and it seems kind of silly,” he said. “Because it’s about the word love. It’s cathartic. … It makes it something that people can smile at.”
Save for the people at the FDA, apparently.
Speaking with the Washington Examiner, Gates said he and Witt hope “to keep love in the mix” and revealed that they plan to send a response to the FDA petitioning for a special exemption.
“In order for the FDA to require that a food producer put a nutrition facts panel on the back of packaging, the producer has to make and sell more than 100,000 units of a particular product in a given year,” he explained. “We don’t make that much granola.”
Good idea.
Regarding the other violations, which included flies being present in ready-to-eat cooling areas, the buildup of debris on a dough mixer and inadequate screening against pests, to name a few, Gates pledged that he and Witt are working to address the FDA’s concerns and prepare themselves for another inspection.
Sounds good. Just do me a favor, Mr. Gates, and don’t show their inspectors any “love,” because clearly they don’t appreciate good loving, do they?
