Female Prof: Let’s Pay Female Professors More For Their ‘Emotional Labor’

A female professor at The University of San Francisco is promulgating an idea that should enrage feminists, but probably won’t: she wants colleges to compensate female faculty members for their “emotional labor.”

According to hard-core feminists, there’s no difference between men and women, so this is really confusing.

As Toni Airaksinwen writes at Campus Reform, Brandi Lawless, a communications studies professor, says the “emotional labor” she refers to consists of “demonstrations of sympathy and empathy, one-on-one attention, supportive communication, counseling, general development of personal relationships, and making a person ‘feel good.’”

Lawless, writing in the March issue of Review of Communications, argues that such Herculean efforts are comparable to teaching classes and grading assignments, and blames the “neoliberal agenda” for making emotional labor an expectation. She claims “the unwritten rule that women are emotional creatures is not natural.”

Other examples of “emotional labor,” according to Lawless? Responding to emails, talking to students during office hours, and interfacing with school disability offices.

But how to solve this staggering problem? Lawless suggests that the female professors be paid for their efforts, adding, “if we cannot stop neoliberalism in its tracks, then we must do something to improve our working conditions.” She wants professors to document their emotional labor and use the documentation to argue for compensation.

Airaksinwen notes, “Lawless isn’t the first to make this argument, however. University of California, Berkeley professor emerita Arlie Hochschild popularized the theory in her 1979 book The Managed Heart, and “emotional labor” is commonly taught in women’s studies and sociology classes.”
