Gun Laws In Canada
Trudeau gets tough on gangs by hassling target shooters
The Justin Trudeau-led Liberal government has announced changes to Canada’s gun laws. The “good” news is, Canada’s large and thriving community of lawful gun owners probably expected it to be much more brutal than this. The bad news is, the laws aren’t really going to make anything better, and will probably make some things worse.
Disclosure: I myself am a lawful gun owner. I’m also a supporter of reasonable and effective gun control measures. Some of what the Liberals are proposing this week is reasonable. Whether it’s effective, well, time will tell.
Gun bill battle grows after ‘Canada’s NRA’ reference in Liberal fundraiser
A national coalition of gun owners is furious after the Liberal party disclosed the coalition was the advocacy group referenced as “Canada’s NRA” in a Liberal fundraising blitz over government gun-control legislation last month.
As firearm owner reaction to the bill grows, the popularity of a Commons E-Petition attacking the legislation suggests the battle over the firearm initiative is just beginning.
The Canadian Coalition for Firearm Rights (CCFR) discovered they are the “Canada’s NRA” a Liberal fundraising email referred to after a coalition member challenged the unusual fundraising blitz two days after the government tabled its gun-control bill on March 20.
Ten Myths About Gun Control
1. VERY FEW PEOPLE IN CANADA OWN FIREARMS
Exactly the opposite is true: twenty-nine per cent of Canadian homes possess an estimated total of nine million firearms. Other authorities insist that even this figure is too low, and that there is at least twenty million firearms in Canada. The UN reported that Canada ranks third among the developed western countries (behind the United States and Norway) in the civilian ownership of firearms.
There is an average of three firearms in every gun-owning Canadian household. The majority of gun-owning households in Canada own rifles and/or shotguns; on a per capita basis, Canadians own nearly as many rifles as Americans.
‘It’s civil disarmament’: Canadian gun owners blast proposed new gun control laws
The federal Liberal government has tabled sweeping new gun control legislation, and some Canadian firearms owners are not pleased.
Among the proposed new regulations are lifetime background checks, a requirement that vendors keep records for 20 years, and a requirement to present a license when buying rifles and shotguns.
Sheldon Clare, president of the National Firearms Association, says the rules will do nothing to stop crime and will hurt law-abiding gun owners.
Tucker Carlson: They Call It Gun Control, But Really It Is People Control
The “Tucker Carlson Tonight” host theorized some Democratic politicians and “blustery charlatans in the media” had much darker aims with their calls for gun control, which he argued had little to do with public safety.
“Let’s stop lying about this,” he said. “The calls we are hearing today for gun control have nothing to do with protecting Americans from violence. What you’re witnessing is a kind of class war. The left hates rural America, red America, gun-owning America, the America that elected Donald Trump. They hate them. Progressives are still in charge of most of the major institutions in this country, and they despise the autonomy of an armed population. They want collective punishment for the sins of a few. They seek to obliterate a core constitutional right rather than trying to mitigate its downsides. They call it gun control, but it’s not. It’s people control. For the left, voters who can’t be controlled, can’t be trusted.”
