Chevy Chase Unloads On SNL: Amazed It’s ‘Gone So Low’

“How could you dare give that generation worse sh** than they already have in their lives?”

Iconic comedic actor Chevy Chase unloaded this week on the show he helped launch. “Saturday Night Live,” Chase told the Washington Post in an interview published Wednesday, is subjecting “a whole generation of sh**heads” to “he worst f***ing humor in the world.”

At times, the 74-year-old “Caddyshack” star’s comments on SNL got a little personal, with Chase calling out specific people, including show creator Lorne Michaels.

“I don’t want to put down Lorne or the cast, but I’ll just say … I’m amazed that Lorne has gone so low. I had to watch a little of it, and I just couldn’t f***ing believe it,” Chase told the Post. “That means a whole generation of sh**heads laughs at the worst f***ing humor in the world. You know what I mean? How could you dare give that generation worse sh** than they already have in their lives? It just drives me nuts.”

When Chase approached Michaels a few years back about getting on the show again, he says the producer told him, “You’re too old.”

“I said, ‘And Helen Mirren’s pretty and young?’ I didn’t get it. You’re too old?” he said. “We’d had many people older than me hosting. What did he mean? I’ve never understood what he meant. Because I’d be very good, and it would be fun for an audience to see me doing that. It’s like denying that I was the guy who made this show really go that first year. It’s like taking all that away from me.”

The quality of the show began to decline rapidly after it first launched in 1975, says Chase; after 1976, his second and last season on the show, everything “went downhill.”

“I’d have to say, that after the first two years, it went downhill,” he said. “Why am I saying that? Because I was in it? I guess. That’s a horrible thing to say. But certainly I never had more fun. I really loved it and enjoyed it. I didn’t see the same fun thing happening to the cast the next year.”

While he praised some of the legendary cast members — including Dan Aykroyd and Gilda Radner — Chase offered some harsh comments on one of the more beloved stars: Will Ferrell. Ferrell’s George W. Bush impersonation is “just not funny,” he said, expressing surprise that Ferrell manages to pull in tens of millions a film.

He also said he isn’t impressed with Tina Fey, remarking that while he likes her and thinks she’s “good,” he just doesn’t see “what all the folderol was about.”

Speaking of Eddie Murphy, whom Chase stressed “was funny,” he said he didn’t actually think much of his widely praised Stevie Wonder impersonation, which is “not that hard, for Christ’s sake. Your skin’s the same color. You just put on some sunglasses and do this.”
