Curtains for Coats? Spy chief in Trump firing line

by Caitlin Yilek

President Trump has grown frustrated with Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats, fueling speculation that the spy chief will be fired.

Coats has broken with Trump on his stance on North Korea, telling Congress last month that he does not believe the hermit kingdom will give up its nuclear weapons program.

Chris Ruddy, a Trump confidant and founder of conservative outlet Newsmax, said earlier this week he’s been told by White House sources that Coats could be fired for his comments that were made weeks before Trump is set to sit down for his second summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

“There’s a feeling that maybe there needs to be a change of leadership in that position,” Ruddy told CNN. “I don’t know what his plan is he doesn’t tell me who he’s gonna dismiss or not. I have talked to various people, not him, that are very close in the White House with the security positions the president is taking.”

The president expressed his anger with Coats over the weekend, according to the Washington Post. Trump told an adviser that Coats is “not loyal” and “he’s not on the team.” He has also asked close allies for replacement suggestions.

“This has been a tense relationship for a long time,” a former senior intelligence official told the newspaper. “Most people don’t think it’s happening tomorrow. But, yes, they think it’s just a matter of time.”
