Erin O’Toole announces first promise in Quebec ahead of expected election

Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole announced plans Saturday to financially support the creation of a Quebec research and development centre on food self-sufficiency.

“It’s time to have a government that is there for you,” O’Toole said.

Pandemic federal election estimated to cost $610M, most expensive in Canadian history

If the prime minister calls an early election amid a looming fourth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, Elections Canada says it could end up being the most expensive in the country’s history.

The elections regulator estimates the price tag for the next election could be in the range of $610 million. That’s $100 million more than the 2019 election.

A lot of the cost is due to pandemic safety measures and the expected flood of mail-in ballots.

Elections Canada estimates the cost of the next federal election could be $610-million. It warns the final total cost is unpredictable and will depend on the status of the pandemic at the time of the election. #cdnpoli

Cuba Reopens to Canadians as Covid Spikes

On the same day, Saturday July 3rd, that Cuba recorded a record number of positive Covid-19 cases, the good news for government beach resorts was the arrival of two flights of tourists from Canada.

The Jardines del Rey airport in the Central Cuban province of Ciego de Avila welcomed the Canadians, traditionally the island’s leading tourist market. The official press noted it was five months since such flights were suspended due to the Covid-19 spike and before vaccination campaigns were underway in some countries.

If I’m vaccinated, why should I care if unvaccinated people don’t wear masks?

Last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced new guidelines for fully vaccinated people about wearing face masks. The guidance said that fully vaccinated people “no longer need to wear a mask or physically distance in any setting, except where required by federal, state, local, tribal, or territorial laws, rules, and regulations, including local business and workplace guidance.”

Unvaccinated Americans are the least worried about the Delta variant, poll finds

But the people most at risk of contracting the Delta variant, those unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated, are also the most likely to say they aren’t worried about the Delta variant, according to a CBS News poll released Sunday. The poll found that 62 percent of all U.S. adults, but only 48 percent of those unvaccinated or partially vaccinated, are concerned about the Delta variant. Among the vaccinated, 72 percent said they are worried about the variant.

The Unvaccinated Are Not Fueling COVID Variants

The assumption that unvaccinated people are viral factories for more dangerous variants is false
Just as antibiotics breed resistance in bacteria, vaccines put evolutionary pressure on viruses to speed up mutations and create more virulent and dangerous variants
Viruses mutate all the time, and if you have a vaccine that doesn’t block infection completely, then the virus will mutate to evade the immune response within that person. That is one of the distinct features of the COVID shots — they’re not designed to block infection.
