Venerated Company’s Coming cookbook author Paré dies in Edmonton at 95

by Anna Junker

“She loved to tell a good joke and couldn’t resist chocolate, often eating her dessert first.”

Paré was born in 1927 in Irma, about 176 km east of Edmonton. She raised four children and had a successful catering career for 18 years before forming the Edmonton-based Company’s Coming Publishing Limited in 1980 with her son, Grant Lovig.

The company started as an experiment with the April 14, 1981, debut of a single cookbook, 150 Delicious Squares, that quickly became a success with books available in grocery stores and bookshops across the country. Other titles such as Muffins and More and Company’s Coming for Christmas have become a staple in many Canadian kitchens.

Paré authored over 200 Company’s coming Cookbooks and in 2011, Paré hung up her apron after 30 years and selling 30 million cookbooks.

“Her passions outside the kitchen included travel, and helping others in need — especially women,” the release states.

“She loved to tell a good joke and couldn’t resist chocolate, often eating her dessert first.”

Paré was made a Member of the Order of Canada, Canada’s highest civilian lifetime achievement honour, and the recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Award.

She is survived by her four children and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

“Her loss will also be deeply felt by the extended Company’s Coming family whom she worked with and mentored for so long. She leaves a community of friends in both Edmonton and Vermilion, Alberta – as well as countless fans and readers around the world.”
