Representatives of the Ontario Federation of Labour, Toronto Steel Workers Union, and Ontario Division of Canadian Union of Public Employees gathered on a Zoom call to clandestinely plan to disrupt the planned Million March 4 Children. The march, organized by parental rights advocates to speak out against the gender identiy indoctrination of Canadian children, will see multiple events across the country on September 20.
Those who took part on the call were eager to keep their undertaking secret, and one participant on the call describes the union leaders at the meeting “co-conspirators” in the fight against “hate mongers.” Despite these efforts, a recording of the Zoom call was leaked to Twitter, which indicates that some people on the call were not on board with the plans and messaging.
Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL) President Patty Coates chaired the secret call. Ontario Federation of Labour Executive Director Rob Helming promised maximum discretion for those present, saying that the recording of the meeting was made for the purpose of minute-taking only, and that the it would be deleted. “We will not be sharing that recording externally,” Helming said. “And as soon as we’re done with the minutes, we’ll be erasing that.”
The union reps called parents “fascists” and said their opposition to gender ideology was based on “hate.” The many union representatives who participated in the call all appeared to be in agreement.
“The ultra-conservative right has organized nationwide events under the pretext of protecting children, while their true aim is to protest the teaching of 2SLGBTQIA+ content in schools,” said the Ontario branch of the Canadian Union of Public Employees in support.
“We need to be co-conspirators,” Director of human rights for the OFL Yolanda B’Dacy told those in attendance said. “We need to be in the effort in such a way that when the rocks are hitting these communities, that they’re hitting us.”
“So as we are saying, as allies we need to come together and say enough is enough,” B’Dacy continued. “We’re not going to tolerate the hate, the intolerance or the indoctrination, any form in any camp, we’re going to organize and we’re going to have rapid response teams ready to combat this hate. And we all need to be co-conspirators in the community to stand up for this group, especially this time on the 20th.”
“The fascists are organizing in the streets,” said Emily, a “fascist researcher” and Carleton University union rep. “I’m a researcher at Carleton. And my focus is fascism in Canada. And the signs that I’ve seen that were rising that this is far more than just like a far right transphobic protest. They are fundamentally racist.”
