NDP leader Jagmeet Singh called on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to resign Monday, but he refused to say whether he would vote with Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives in a non-confidence vote.
“Mr. Trudeau’s government is over. He must acknowledge that and act accordingly,” he told reporters.
Singh made the comments at a news conference in Ottawa, per the CBC. However, he would only say that “all options are on the table” as reporters asked him how he could demand Trudeau resign and yet not declare his intention to bring down the same government he says he opposes.
“We’ll look at each vote and we’ll make a decision, but now all options are on the table,” he added in his comments.
Finance Minister Chyrstia Freeland shocked both Canadians and Parliamentarians Monday announcing her resignation from the Trudeau cabinet, where she was also the deputy prime minister. Freeland posted her resignation letter, which was extremely critical of Trudeau’s leadership and economic policy, on X. She said the prime minister was fixated on economic “gimmicks” that endanger economic stability of the country. Speculation is mounting that Trudeau will either resign or prorogue Parliament.
Singh announced in September that he was “ripping up” a loose coalition agreement with Trudeau and the Liberals. But since then he has steadfastly refused to vote against the Trudeauf government in several non-confidence votes.
