Researchers Believe They Are Close to Cracking The Mystery of the Lost Colony of Roanoke

Researchers believe they may have solved the mystery of the lost colony of Roanoke.

The Lost Colony of Roanoke was an English settlement established by Governor John White on Roanoke Island that mysteriously disappeared in 1590.

In 1587, Governor White left the Island to get supplies in England, but upon his return, he discovered the colonists were all missing, hence beginning one of America’s greatest mysteries.

Now, researchers believe they have pinpointed the location of the lost colony by analyzing the “La Virginea Pars,” a 400-year-old map created by White.

British Museum curator Kim Sloan and her colleague Alice Rugheimer got closer to cracking the long-time mystery after placing White’s map on a lightbox, which resulted in the pair discovering a fort behind a blank coverup.

After discovering the fort, Sloan shared, “I said to Alice, I think we just discovered the intended site for the Cittie of Raleigh, the colony that John White was sent to Virginia to found.”
