Thomas Massie Introduces Bill to Withdraw U.S from NATO: ‘Cold War Relic’ Draining American Taxpayers

Republican Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) has moved to withdraw the United States from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), introducing legislation that would formally end America’s membership in the 75-year-old alliance.

Massie argues the treaty has long outlived its purpose, drained trillions from American taxpayers, and entangled the country in conflicts far beyond its national interest.

“NATO is a Cold War relic,” Massie wrote on X.

“The United States should withdraw from NATO and use that money to defend our country, not socialist countries.

“Today, I introduced HR 6508 to end our NATO membership.”

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) quickly announced her support, reposting Massie’s statement and adding, “Co-sponsoring this.”

In a press release, Massie expanded on the rationale behind the bill, underscoring his longstanding argument that NATO has become a liability, not an asset, to American security.

“NATO was created to counter the Soviet Union, which collapsed over thirty years ago,” he said.

“Since then, U.S. participation has cost taxpayers trillions of dollars and continues to risk U.S. involvement in foreign wars.

“Our Constitution did not authorize permanent foreign entanglements, something our Founding Fathers explicitly warned us against.

“America should not be the world’s security blanket—especially when wealthy countries refuse to pay for their own defense.”

Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) introduced companion legislation earlier this year, the “Not a Trusted Organization Act,” or “NATO Act.”
