Eric Swalwell Resigns From Congress Amid Sexual Assault Allegations
Democrat Rep. Eric Swalwell on Monday announced that he will resign from Congress amid sexual assault allegations.
The California Democrat apologized to his family and constituents in a statement on Monday.
“I am deeply sorry to my family, staff, and constituents for mistakes in judgment I’ve made in my past,” Swalwell said.
“However, I must take responsibility and ownership for the mistakes I did make,” he said.
Swalwell said he is aware of efforts to bring an immediate expulsion vote against him.
“Expelling anyone in Congress without due process, within days of an allegation being made, is wrong. But it’s also wrong for my constituents to have me distracted from my duties. Therefore, I plan to resign my seat in Congress,” Swalwell said.
Swalwell resigned from Congress just one day after he dropped out of the California governor’s race.
