Maxime Bernier calls for gov’t to cut university’s funding after banning young woman for life

(LifeSiteNews) — One of Canada’s sane voices calling out anti-woke politics said that all federal funding should be cut to a Canadian university that banned a woman for life for listening to a conversation about the Iran war.
“The federal government must cut all funding to the University of Guelph until it respects the diversity of thought,” wrote Maxime Bernier, leader of the People’s Party of Canada (PPC), in an X post.
Bernier was responding to news of Sarah Dotzert, a young conservative activist who, as reported by LifeSiteNews, posted a YouTube video about her ordeal of being banned from the University of Guelph campus.
According to Dotzert, she was banned because she overheard a private conversation that her father had about the Iran war with several Muslims.
Dotzert said she received a letter in the mail from the university titled “notice of trespass.” She has promised to fight the campus ban, which was also extended to her father, an alumnus of the University of Guelph.
Bernier’s comments received some reaction, with one person noting how it’s “hard to find an academic institution worthy of taxpayers’ support these days.”
“Look at the grads they produce, it’s horrifying seeing how they behave in the work force — leaving out the productivity issue,” X user Peter Wood wrote in reply to Bernier.
Dotzert said that her case has “massive implications” for “everyone,” adding that she is “going to try to fight this.”
“I’m hopeful and prayerful that we can actually get something done here. I hope to goodness that they are reasonable and that they will listen to reason because this is ridiculous,” she said.
As reported by LifeSiteNews, Canada’s universities under former Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and now under successor Mark Carney promised $110 million to fund DEI projects, many of which concern Canadian post-secondary institutions.
The University of Guelph is no stranger to woke ideology. As reported by LifeSiteNews, a professor from the university recently claimed that the Olympic transgender ban will “harm women.”
Studies have shown that DEI hiring practices at most of Canada’s top universities are rampant.
