Seattle’s Socialist Mayor Backtracks on Starbucks Boycott as Mass Business Exodus Concerns Intensify

by David Lindfield

Seattle’s radical Democrat socialist Mayor Katie Wilson is facing mounting criticism after walking back previous calls to boycott Starbucks, a reversal that has reignited debate over whether progressive policies and anti-business rhetoric are pushing employers, investment, and jobs out of deep-blue cities.

Wilson, who previously encouraged residents to boycott the Seattle-based coffee giant, acknowledged in a recent interview that her comments had “caused more harm than good.”

It comes as scrutiny grows over Seattle’s business climate and Starbucks’ expanding investments outside Washington state.

The reversal comes as Starbucks moves forward with a $100 million expansion in Tennessee that is expected to create thousands of jobs, fueling concerns that major employers increasingly view lower-tax, business-friendly states as more attractive destinations for future growth.

Starbucks Expansion Puts Spotlight on Seattle’s Business Climate

Critics quickly seized on Wilson’s reversal as evidence that Seattle’s progressive leadership is becoming increasingly hostile toward employers.

“If Starbucks doesn’t leave Seattle, they’re stupid,” Tim Young, a media fellow at The Heritage Foundation, wrote on X.

Young expanded on those remarks in statement, arguing that Wilson lacks the experience necessary to understand the consequences of anti-business policies.

“Mayor Wilson is what happens when a spoiled child whose parents have been there to correct for all their financial issues for years is put into a place of authority,” Young said.

“She has no concept of consequences for her actions, especially when dealing with other people’s money.”

Young continued:

“Seattle, nor any other jurisdiction in the world, can survive someone with literally no relevant life or business experience to run it.”
