Authorities Issue Alert as ‘Toxic Plume’ Spreads Across 3 States, Over 1 Million Americans Told to Stay Indoors

More than one million Americans across Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona have been warned to stay indoors and keep their windows shut as a massive dust plume drives air quality into dangerous territory across the Southwest.
Air quality monitors sounded alarms Friday as dust storms pushed thick concentrations of particulate pollution across large sections of the U.S.-Mexico border region, prompting health warnings for residents and raising concerns about long-term air quality problems in the area.
El Paso at Center of Air Quality Emergency
The hardest-hit area is El Paso, Texas, a border city of nearly 900,000 residents located directly across from Juárez, Mexico.
Federal air quality monitors classified conditions across much of the El Paso metropolitan area as “unhealthy,” while some locations near Fort Bliss reached the more severe “very unhealthy” category.
According to real-time monitoring data, air quality readings in parts of northern El Paso climbed to 411 on the Air Quality Index scale.
The Environmental Protection Agency warns that once air quality reaches the 300-500 range, all individuals, not just vulnerable groups, should avoid outdoor physical activity due to serious health risks.
The dust plume stretches roughly 200 miles along portions of Texas and New Mexico, creating hazardous conditions for communities throughout the region.
Fine Particles Pose Serious Health Risks
Officials say the primary concern is PM10 pollution, microscopic dust particles small enough to be inhaled deep into the lungs.
While larger than the PM2.5 particles commonly associated with vehicle exhaust and industrial emissions, PM10 particles can still trigger significant health problems.
